Why do I teach and coach?
I teach because I want to leverage my life for the benefit of the next generation and develop student champions. For me, teaching and coaching is student-focused and teacher-driven. Students want a competent and qualified teacher in the classroom with whom they can connect relationships to information and then to life experiences.
I believe this is best done by coming to teach every day and being that champion to encourage them in learning literacy, strategic and critical thinking, applying what they learn, and giving real-life examples so they can connect themselves to the world and achieve their goals.
I teach for Lucas who taught me that teachers need to exhibit “tough love” some days to get the appropriate reception. I teach for Jacquelyn who taught me that attitude is infectious and effort can overshadow ability.
Educator Rita Pierson said, “Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists they become the best they can possibly be.”
Goal setting is the difference-maker in teaching. Michael Jordan said, “I’m a firm believer in goal setting. Step by step. I can’t see any other way of accomplishing anything.”
I teach and coach because I hope to see more in my students than they see in themselves. That’s what my best teachers and coaches showed me and I dedicate any effectiveness I might have to each one them.
