CEO STRENGTH COACH: Chapter 3 by Coach Amer

Job hunting these days can seem like a multiple choice test, where doors are closing in your face; however, we tend to look at the negative versus the positive, ignoring the fact that there are still “multiple doors.”  In this chapter Coach Ron McKeefery discussed the multiple connections, options, and positions he went through, so that he could attain his dream job. Each door he approached had more “multiple choices,” which lead him closer to his goal.

Multiple Choices Topic 16

I certainly relate to Coach McKeefery’s multiple choices, as I’ve gone through 3 different aspects of coaching over the past 3 years since graduating from East Carolina University in 2013. These past 3 years have brought about great choices; starting with the dual internship I had at Duke Raleigh Disease and Lifestyle management center, where I helped cardiac and pulmonary rehab patients with their fitness goals. During this same time I was doing another internship at the Athletic Lab/Cary Crossfit working with great sport performance/strength and conditioning coaches (some that hold PhDs in bio0mechanics).  I benefited from coaching Crossfit, coaching weightlifting, coaching scholastic athletes, maintaining a big facility, and improving my personal coaching brand.

After the internships came to an end, I took a volunteer assistant-ship at Cardinal Gibbons High School with Coach Morland which was vital for my career.  This helped shape me as a strength and conditioning coach above other aspects of the health and fitness industry. After 2 years at Gibbons I have been training with Life Time Athletic in Raleigh for just over 6 months.

These experiences have enhanced my business savvy on the commercial side of fitness, yet I am learning the same lesson of “improving the movement, life, and performance quality of all those who I work with.”  I can relate to Coach Ron because there will be some guesses in this multiple choice test, but I must be willing to take a chance not knowing exactly where it might lead me. Coach McKeefery did take the risk when he became the Head Coach at University of South Florida, and went on to build a successful program.  At Life Time Athletic, I strive to positively impact my clients’ lives, even though I know commercial fitness training is just a step for me in my career.

In summary, my goal is to remain open-minded in the multiple choices I am faced with,  and be willing to take risks despite the many choices and questions in my career.  I want to keep learning and developing my coaching brand as an ambassador of healthy living, strength training, and physical literacy.  My goal is to utilize my strength and conditioning background to help the larger population in the Raleigh-Durham area as a trainer for the largest facility on the east coast, Life Time Athletic!
