Happy MLK Day and the Education Series by Gibbons Strength (GS) Coaches,
Happy Martin Luther King Day! This past weekend 5 strength coaches and 6 student-athletes converged on Wake Forest University to attend the NC High School Strength Coaches Association Clinic. There were too many highlights to discuss briefly so our team of coaches plan to take the next three weeks to discuss topics in an effort to support the sport coaches, student-athletes, and Gibbons community with what we learned so it can be applied at our school.
In this first post I’d like to simply introduce the vision of this effort and explain a little bit about how we see the importance of education to what we teach and coach each day. It has been said that:
“if you give a man a fish he can live for a day but if you teach a man to fish he can live for a lifetime.”
Cardinal Gibbons High School exists to “form young men and women of faith, service, and leadership” and strength and conditioning is an excellent way to practically build this process daily. I began coaching 10 years ago at the University of North Texas with about 120 Track and Field student-athletes, moved to NC State and coached 17 different men’s and women’s sports and literally more than a 1000 college athletes that achieve Olympic gold medals, ACC individual and team championship, and now seen success with high school state championships.
Along the way the most important process I’ve engaged in with the coaches around me is that of professional development. These opportunities included attending about 30 professional conferences all over the US by different professional organizations and bringing back information to share with 40 different assistant coaches I’ve coached with.
Over the next few weeks our GS team will expand on what we’ve learned in our education in the areas of: methodology, program design, functional movement, female- specific training, teaching technique, non-conventation training, nutrition, monitoring, and other hot topics in the field. We have a wealth of information at our fingertips and look forward to your input and feedback. Please send correspondence to: GibbonsStrength@cghsnc.org
