For the last 7 out of 9 years I’ve made the trip West over the mountains to Johnson City, Tennessee for the Coaches College at East Tennessee University. This conference is one of the top choices for coaches interested in the science of sport. It is one of my highlights of the year but especially this year because I just finished my first year at Cardinal Gibbons High School.
Each year there is a focus or theme and this year it is “The Education of the Elite-Level Coach.” So far I’ve heard from Meg Stone and Doc Stone who are the bedrocks of sport science development here at ETSU program which is a program of Excellence and a Olympic Training Site. The second and third speakers talked about training the US Olympic Bobsled team and Lance Armstrong the American cyclist.
Top 5 things I’ve learned today:
- There at a lot of educators here that know good ways train athletes safe and with excellence
- There is a right way and a wrong way to go about building a your training
- Be committed and consistent with your training program
- There are very few high school coaches here which needs to develop
- This panel of coaches has 100+ years of coaching experience
